Cherwell Cricket League

Shipton 3rd XI vs Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondiescripts 4

Home on Saturday 7th July. Competition: League
Result: Won by 5 Runs

Shipton won the toss when hoping to lose it and, undecided as what to do with a slightly green and damp wicket, elected to bat. By the fifth over of play this appeared to be a poor decision after seeing many balls that should have been around chest height around ankle-height. However, the wicket got better as the day went along.

In the second over of the game Shipton opener Tom Walker took a hit to the knee which bruised up immediately, forcing him to retire. He would later return with brother Sam as a runner, finishing 2 not out batting at number 2. Three overs later skipper Justin Hemming ran himself out for 8. This brought Mike Duester (37) and Josh Bishop (53) to the crease, producing the backbone of Shipton's innings. The game turned when the O&B captain brought on P. Greenwood (6-34) and after his first over went for 14, wickets started to fall consistantly. Support from Matthew Hemming (25) and Tom Hext (16) saw Shipton finish on 187 all out from 43 overs.

O&B inning's did not get off to a great start with opener P. Norton out in the first over for 2. This brought skipper Malcom West to the crease, and he soon got after the Shipton attack. As well as managing to smash one of the school windows, he managed to rack up 66 in double-quick time before being brilliantly caught one-handed by his opposite number. At this point, despite some fight from A. Chambers (24) and N. Price (16), opening bowler Sam Walker returned to clean up the last 4 wickets to finish with 6-50. Youngsters Ross Barret (2-25) and Ryan Tinson (2-17) provided able support and were economical even during Wests onslaught.

O&B fell short by an agonising 5 runs as they finished up 182 all out in reply to Shipton's 187 which provided Shipton with deserved revenge for their loss against O&B the previous week.

Both games have been played in great competitive spirit and we hope to arrange a friendly when our league season finishes, a decider as it were! We look forward to it.
