Chairman's Welcome 2010

2009 was a better year weather wise, with only five league games abandoned for the three league teams. The 1st team again avoided relegation by a comfortable forty points margin. This was no mean effort considering the loss of our overseas player and of Dicken Morris who had scored a lot of runs in the previous season. As per usual, injuries hit us hard, which is the perennial problem with such an ageing squad.

Well done to Shaun Miller who gets better with age and showed everybody what a class bowler he is. It was also heartening to see Andy “Chipmunk” Hemming return to form with the bat.

We did not enter the Village Knockout last year, due to Romesh Eranga’s involvement with the club. A disappointing League Cup exit at the hands of Bourton Vale was made up for by our appearance in the final of the Bernard Tollett competition.

Paul Hemming is standing down as captain for next season, due to his move to sunny Berkshire. I would like to thank him for all the work he has put into the club, not only last year but over the previous years, I hope that Paul Hemming will still stay on as a player, if at all possible.

The 2nds were a great disappointment last year. Their points tally was not helped by our inability to find a scorer and an umpire early in the season and I thank Sue Hayes for stepping into the breach as scorer and doing a wonderful job. Messrs Jerry Seniorand Simon Dickensled the way with the bat and ball respectively.

The 3rds reached a respectable 8th position in the league under Charlie Barrett. Josh Bishopagain won the batting award and Jon Geekie made a move up from promising youngster to consistent wicket taker.

The Over 40’s won the County Cup for the third time in a row to give the club some end of season silverware.

The second tour to South Yorkshire took place. I have not seen quite so much rain fall in a week and only half a game was possible. We will try again next year.

Thank you to the Sunday match managers. Unfortunately the interest in friendly cricket continues to wane and I foresee that in the very near future some sort of Sunday League will be necessary for clubs in Oxfordshire.

Our Club 20/20 day, combined with the Greg Barrett Memorial match, was a great success. Thank you to Justin Hemmingand Hannah Barrett for organising the event.

One of the greatest changes in the club in recent years is the construction of the nursery ground. It is hoped that the 3rd team, plus the Youth teams, will be playing on this ground in the 2010 season. Thanks go to Geoff Miles, Charlie Barrett, Christian Brain and A.P.W.as the main movers in making this happen.

Youth team cricket at the club goes from strength to strength. Special congratulations go to Joe Barrett who has been given a place with the Gloucestershire Academy. Thanks go to the current sponsors F W P Matthews and Chris Hayter Transport and I hope that links with the club will continue to flourish. I also thank all members of the 100 Club and VPs for their continued support.

Looking forward to the 2010 season, we have a new captain in Simon Hole who has rejoined us from Banbury. Simon, as you know, is a quality cricketer and I hope he gets everyone’s support in building a successful team over the next two to three years. Christian Brainand Steve Carvey will be running the 2nds this year and will be hoping to continue the development of young players for the 1st team. Charlie Barrett will again be combining a mixture of youthful experience and hopefully continuing the improvement of the 3rds. It is hoped that this 3rd team will be playing on the nursery ground this season but this will depend very much on our ability to raise the funds to provide a pavilion for that ground.

Fund-raising is going to be of the upmost importance this year. Ian Lewis is heading a fund-raising committee and is planning various fund-raising events throughout the season, culminating in a Sportsmans Dinner late in the season when it is hoped that Adrian Chiles will be our guest speaker (no pressure Andy Thompson). Please give Ian and his team all the support you can.

You will be aware that a number of officers of the club have changed and I would like to thank Mark Meredith, who has been Club Secretary for many years, for all his hard work. Justin Hemming is taking over from Mark this year, Paul Jennings will be holding the purse strings and Steve Carveywill be organising the fixtures.

On your return to the ground this season you will notice that we have continued to refurbish the facilities in the bar and changing rooms. Please do your best to keep the pavilion area as tidy as possible this year so that we all have facilities that we can enjoy.
